So Dakota has been on Tenex since Feb. Well it seems to work ok until it wears off. Ok so my situation now is...I had to find Dakota a new psych dr because the one we had left the practice to teach. So I found one closer and had excellent referrences. So I took Dakota on Monday. We get back to her office and as she is watching Dakota, she asks why he isnt on stims? I told her his last doc said she always started them on non stims. So this new doc wants to keep dakota on his current (Tenex) and add a stimulant and possibly a mood stablizer. So does anyone have expewrience with adding all these things together. Dakota is falling asleep in class and thats why we are going to add the stimulant but i just would like some input please

Oh Aimee, I remember how hard it was when Josh was younger as to what meds to go with, and what not to. It is such a hard decision to make when it comes to our kids. All I can really suggest is to always remember it is YOUR choice, not the doctors, as to what you decide to do. The reason why I stress that is because there was a few times I was talked into placing my son on something I didn't feel comfortable with and I was right all along. The best thing to do is REALLY research each suggested medication and come to your own decision.
I have had my son on every medication you mentioned, in every combination. My philosophy now is the less, the better. If the Tenex is making him drowsy, it sounds to me the the dosage may be too high. Maybe a stimulant alone would be worth a try. Or as your doctor suggested, adding a small stimulant. We did Tenex and a stim for awhile also. As for the mood stabilizer, that's a tricky one. What type of behavior are you seeing to suggest a mood stabilizer? We did one for a year and a half for anxiety and it is the one medication I have always regretted. Not because it doesn't work for children who need it, but because of some lasting side effects that we still see today 6 years later. (PM me if you want the details).
I know you'll make the right decision for your little guy. I just wanted to let you know that I've been there and you can ask me anything.
How is Dakota doing these days? I remember you saying he had a pretty good start to the school year. Is he still doing well?
