Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post sorry in advance if I picked the wrong thread.
My 7.5 y/o son has been on only one med so far, 20 mg then to 30 mg of Vyvanse and recently added 5mg of dextroamphetamie for night time.
The 30 mg has been great for school, the teacher has noticed tremendous improvement in his focus to school work, she noted almost hyper focused but atleast he is focused on the right thing and not off the wall. She also noted that he would seem to walk with shoulders down and not smiling as much but would play with friends fine, smile, laugh etc just when alone he would seem sad. At home, on weekends, he would hyper focus on one activity, legos, puzzles, video games, word search, etc selfishly it was great there was no fighting between him and his older sister, barely hear a peep out of him UNTIL I ask or try to break him of whatever he is doing, even if its to do something fun, like say go to the movies, he FLIPS OUT, total transition issues. ALways had this never been able to figure out how to handle and get through this without flipping out, usually end up bribeing him with something which usually almost never works. Sometime I would "let" him play whatever kept him quiet all day, I know probably wrong, but its kept the peace in the house.
Now the meds make the flips out worse and he flips out quicker and more intense and over the littlest things, before meds, he may have an issue of me cooking green beans instead of corn, but would eat green beans and would ask for corn for the next day after a good scream...On meds he would flip out if I didnt cook corn and might refuse to eat all of dinner (and mumma guilt may cause me to cook what he wants to get him to eat)
So I took him off the dextro, with dr;s OK, and we are going back to them tomorrow to discuss a different med, they said we may want to look at a non stim instead, he said 50% of kids just dont agree with a stim and my son may be one that needs a non stim.
Does it sound right? That we would only try only one stim then go to non stim, or you think we should try another stim? when we were discussing meds, he showed me 3 grades of meds, 2 which of were stims, one had the vyvanse in it, and the other I think had adderall, and then the non stim grade, i would think he would want to try the other grade of stims before going non stim. I am so new to this I dont want to sound like a druggie mom but I dont think I want to got through the 2-3 week "wait" for the non stim med to get into him system to see if its gonna work. I dont have that kind of patience left in me.
Any advice or suggestions on how to discuss with dr without looking like the druggie mom I feel like?
thank you
