Slingerland has worked well for my Dyslexic Son. Slingerland is an Orton Gillingham based reading and writing program. It is a systematic, researched based language program that teaches all the leters, letter combinations and blends and digraphs to kids in a multi-sensory way. They draw in the air, say the sounds, they practice with the sounds they pick the correct sounds from a list of words, the hear the definition and have to pick the word. it uses all the senses to help the brain remember the sound or letter or blend. with repetition and practice in this way the brain builds better road ways so that the knowledge can be accessed and used when needed to sound out a word when needed. Some kids just get reading naturally, but some need this particular type of repetition and teaching to get it well and learn to do it correctly.
Slingerland does alot of writing and repetition of writing on big lined paper and in the air with the whole arm. My son's writing went from unreadable to very nice on the one ince paper. little writing and unlined paper is still a mess but now even 1/3 inch with 3 lines is really neat.
Most Orton Gillingham systems work similarly. Wilson, LMBell, Barton, Language! there are a number of OG based language programs.
I"m not an expert, but it is working very well for my son. 2 times a week before school. we did 4 days a week over the summer and he has made 13 months progress in reading in 6 months. he will sit with books now and try to figure the comics out. it is really fun to see. long and hard, but i have an adult brother who never really got it. still can't write or read well, very sad for him.
