Charlie Girlwww.allkindsofminds.org/ptk/mathDifficulties.aspxWhat Can Stand in the Way of a Student's Mathematical Development? Math difficulties can arise at nearly any stage of a child's scholastic development. While very little is known about the neurobiological or environmental causes of these problems, many experts attribute them to deficits in one or more of six different skill types. These deficits can exist independently of one another or can occur in combination. All can impact a child's ability to progress in mathematics. Incomplete Mastery of Number Facts Computational Weakness Difficulty Transferring Knowledge Making Connections Incomplete Understanding of the Language of Math Difficulty Comprehending the Visual and Spatial Aspects and Perceptual Difficulties Observations at Home Output Difficulties Organizational Difficulties Language Difficulties Attention Difficulties Visual Spatial or Ordering Difficulties Difficulties with multiple tasks

Hi, i have just clicked on the above link and its like my school history. Incomplete Mastery Of Number Facts- Yip when i was wee this was a problem for me Computational Weakness- Yip i still have problems with that now. I can never remember which numbers i am carrying over when doing any type of sums. Especially when i am doing it mentally its quite difficult to do, unless i have paper then although i may still get it wrong, it'll be more right than by doing it mentally Difficulty Transferring Knowledge- Yip unless i can see what i need to know ie what is half a cup, three quarters etc then i struggle majorly Making Connections- Can not understand at all weights/lengths/volumes Incomplete Understanding Of The Language Of Maths- Yip had writing difficulties and reading difficulties, can not tell the difference in directions and in a school report states that i do not understand Maths concepts Difficulty Comprehending The Visual And Spatial Aspects And Perceptual Difficulties- Yip i can not understand lengths/weights, find it hard to judge speed and distance
After reading this i was shocked to realize how bad it may look to others, i mean i am a young woman and it probably looks like i should be in primary school as this is what they learn when you are 9 years old.

Difficulty Comprehending The Visual And Spatial Aspects And Perceptual Difficulties- Yip i can not understand lengths/weights, find it hard to judge speed and distance THIS is what worries me most with my daughter..in a few years she'll be wanting to learn to drive & if she's still not able to judge speed & distance then no way can I let her learn to drive. I mean, that'd be an accident just waiting to happen!

I know that's why i don't drive. I can not even tell you how long it would take to get to Glasgow/Edinburgh and they are on the West Coast of Scotland. I live on the East Coast, thats also with relatives living in Glasgow. Its quite frustrating as its like well its obviously not difficult or little kids wouldn't be able to understand this.

I am totally math impaired but have been driving for 40+ years. My eldest is math impaired and she has driven for close to 20 years. I can not judge speed and distance but it hasn't been a great impediment. Drop by Net Haven for further discussion of this issue:) peace, marge www.net-haven.net

Not to worry Misty!
Sue loves talking about math more than she likes to talk about reading strategies:) Drop by any Wednesday night.

What's really annoying is that despite having several other problems when at school- reading and writting problems i have overcame them but not maths. Its weird. I mean the fact that i couldn't read until i was 8 years old but can read quite well now, spelling still an issue. I use to have trouble writting the word "TABLE" i use to get the L and the E the wrong way around, i still can not spell (sorry about this) ciggerettes? hope thats the correct spelling of it. Nor could i spell "TORRENTIAL" until 3 months ago, i spelt it everyother way than the correct way. My writing is still quite difficult to read but least its better than before hand. So why do i find maths difficult. I dont think ill ever find out. But least at the end of the day i can always say i TRY!!
