The little boy I have legal guardianship of has ODD. Some days it's so hard but I tell myself it's not his fault. There is so much wrong with him. He also has FAE, bipolar, LD, MMR. He is such a sweet kid though, very loving. I'm so glad the lord blessed my family with him. Some day when I have time I'll tell you about his story. It's kind of long and I am at work.

I know what all the acronyms are except the MMR. Could you tell us what it is so we can put it in our acronym file?
You do have your hands full. We're here for you any time you need us.

upmom...I think you are a guardian angel for this little boy. I can only imagine what you go through on a daily basis with this little guy. What a blessing you are to him, as he is to you. When you have time, come back a give us a little history. We'd love to help you in anyway. That is a lot of dx's to deal with, we're here for you whenever you need us!

MMR=Mild Mental Retardation
Kahlebs biological parents had their tights taken away when he was about 2 yrs old. His mom drank throughout her pregnancy and did drugs. His grandma (on dads side) adopted him. She was sick with a rare heart condition but took him in anyway. His grandma was my best friend. My hubby and I basically took care of the both of them. She had her adult kids living with her and taking advantage of her. Kahlebs bio father was there but had nothing to do with him. He came and went as he pleased. Kahlebs uncles were very nasty and would literally beat the crap out of each other and on a couple of occasions tried to kill one another in front of Kahleb. Grandma came into some financial problems and had all of her utilities shut off so we took her and Kahleb in to live with us. On August 23rd, 2006 Brenda (grandma) got sick with what we thought was the flu and come to find out she ended up with a bacterial infection in her blood and ended up dying of severe sepsis. I was there at the hospital when she died and it was the hardest thing to deal with. My hubby and I got home and went to the courthouse and filed for guardianship and were granted it with out any problems and here we are a year later. I have put a lot of time into getting him diagnoses with all the things that are wrong with him. He is my little boy. My hubby and I are mom and dad. Kahleb has no idea who his biological mother is. No one in that family is allowed to have anything to do with him. Kahleb is broken but he is mine and nothing will ever change that.
Sorry it's so long but thats a bit of history about him an dhow we got him.

That story is so sad. Kahleb is very blessed to have you and your husband.
I know someone with an adopted son who has FAS and I know how hard it is on her and her dh. Their son is 13 now and I have seen what a strong, loving home with parents who are committed to doing all they can for him has done. I've also seen how hard it has been.
We're here for you any time you need to vent or need encouragement. I don't think she has had to deal with the ODD but I'm sure I could call her and ask her advice for the FAE if you ever need me to.

I think its a shame that there are parents who will hurt & abandon their kids. Most are not as lucky as kahleb. Thank God he has you to give him a family & the help he needs. Thanks for sharing his story with us. I'm sure you'll get the support you need here & find some answers.

It's scary to think that their are kids out there with the same problems as kahleb and aren't getting any help. I have a nephew who has just been diagnosed with ADHD combined type and ODD. The only reason he got the help is because I kept pushing my brother and his girlfriend to bring him to the doctors. I actually go to the doc appts with his girlfirend. He is doing so much better now that he is on Adderall. I do feel blessed to have Kahleb. I'm afraid to think what he would be going through if he was put somewhere else. I'm also really glad I found this site. You all are great!!
