My Very Discouraging Day

When I picked up Sean from school yesterday his teacher needed to talk to me. She told me he had a very bad day-had to sit separately for most of it and had been disrespectful to the classroom aide. She said she feels bad because nothing she tries is working with Sean. She has seen no improvement in his behavior since the beginning of school in fact it has gotten worse.She did mention his letter recognition is getting better. She is going to talk to the counselor and have her call me.
Then Sean's friend came over after school. I had written a note to my husband from the Christmas tree and taped it to it to "remind"him to put it away. Anyway his friend was looking at it and started laughing and said that it was funny that I made the note from the tree. He then read the entire note aloud with no hesitations.I almost fell over! That got me thinking about when my older son started reading. I remembered he used to read the sports page aloud in the morning when we ate breakfast. He was doing that before we moved in Oct. So now I am really concerned. Sean doesnt even know all his letters.Why isnt he getting more help in school!?
Then we went to psych.appt. She spoke to us alone then Sean. After describing his behaviors to her she said At first this sounded like ADHD but the more you tell me I believe it could be several other things, bp is a definite possibility. We are going back next week alone so she can discuss with us what she got from talking to him.
And finally later that day he was upstairs crying for a while, I got him to come down and he just cried but didnt know why. I said why are you so sad? He said I dont know, I just dont know how I got this way. It broke my heart. He just put his head in my lap and cried for about half an hour.

I feel so bad for you.

It is very discouraging news but at the same time, you have found a psych who is willing to look beyond the obvious to find what is really going on. In the long run, he is on his way to getting what he really needs to become successful as himself. That will do more for his self esteem than all the wrong interventions ever could.

Oh Katiekat, I feel so bad for you and your son. I have cried on the phone with my sister because her daughter has times just like your son. It is heartbreaking for me the auntie, I can't imagine how it must feel as the mommie.

I do think you will get to the bottom of things because you are a persistant caring parent. I wish it could happen for you overnight.

Katiekat I'm sorry Sean feels so sad randomly. Jake has been starting to show signs of frustration at school and burst out in sobbs because he can't simply right his name we have practiced and practiced all the letter work sheets and the teacher is going to recomend Occupational Therapy. I asked her when does my child have time to be a kid in Kindergarten between Speech, the reading program and all the stuff they have to go over in class now. He's only there 2 hr and 45 min a day.

Just in case you forgot Jake is going to go in for the nuerologist and Psy evaluation because of his behavior and impulsiveness. I hope they find you an answer soon that way you can get the questions, doubts, and fears out of yours and his head. You are doing a great job it never hurts to hear it in times of crisis as many times as you can

Thanks guys for all your support and encouraging words. I try to console myself with the knowledge that right now Im doing everything possible to make things better for Sean. Now that we have the psychologist started,the nuero. appt. set up, and the complete eval. with the child study team to happen I hope we can get some answers and things can start going in a positive direction. The thing that gets to me the most is his depression. Its hard for me to comprehend that someone so young can be so sad for no obvious reason. To see him that unhappy at just 6 years old is just heartbreaking. I cant imagine what that must feel like.

it so frustrating for us parents.....Cheryl gets that way and sh e is 12 going on 13, when she was younger she would cry over something little but it would continue for an hour,
I would ask her why are you still crying, and she waould say because she feels like it and she doesn't know why.

I sure hope you appointments clear things up and get you on the right track.
