I tell my kids the same thing about grades.
I also point out that if the teachers see they are really trying and not getting it, they are much more willing to try to help but when they don't even turn in a paper, the teachers think they didn't try and that is the problem. At least a bad paper shows they did something.
Quite often, if they hand the assignment in, the teachers can see where they had problems and have some idea where they are struggling and therefore, where they need the help.

Speaking of humiliation----we went to the mall today, it's my oldest's birthday tomorrow. Everything went well, until we decided to stop at Pizza Hut for some lunch. My youngest was flipping out because the table was just wiped down clean & she did not like it! Luckily, there wasn't too many ppl in there. She just wouldn't stop about the table, so we got up & left before we even ordered & came straight HOME!!!!!

Sometimes you have to make them learn that lesson the hard way whether it's at pizza hut or school. I'm sure you feel horrible about not getting to treat the kids to lunch but when you're paying for it they should be able to abide by your rules on manners. It all counts in the long run on how well mannered of an adult you'll end up creating. You did the right thing. We have had several occasions where Jake has been carried out of a restaraunt kicking and carrying on and we either get it to go or make something at home. My husband and I have a tag team one drags out the kid and one pays while my darling child waits in the car!
