Oh Yes ... this is something I have long believed is true .... IMHO soooo much is down to our "genes" and what we inherit ... so look out for Uncle Joe who was a crazy bank robber!! But seriously ... we have had a TV documentary here in the UK looking at soooo many of the examples of diseases and mental disorders going down through the generations ... its impossible to ignore! ... Just take a look at adhd as an example ... Most (if not all) of those who have it will find it in their family tree on one side or another of the family ... Sometimes this isn't found in the actual parents but just take a look at the "bigger" family picture ... and I would put my money on the fact it will be there ... Personally I think genetics definitely are the biggest influence in our lives ... Ok I am going to get right off my soap box now !!

I think genetics have a major part in in. The disorder is there and its up to us as parents to do whatever we can to help our child learn to live with it and manage it.
We do have some control but certainly not as much as certain people would like to claim we do.

I believe this very strongly as well. When we go to the Dr and they ask us about certain illnesses. I tell them my grandmother or cousin or aunt and they say only your immediate family. My first kid is a carbon copy of my only boy cousin from looks down to health issues and my aunt that had a lot of health problems I have some of the same issues as she did. I hate when they don't take that into account. My family tree is one sided (my mother) and my husband is adopted so we don't have a lot to work with. and what we do have is far from the textbooks they were educated out of!

I totally agree with this too. Sean is nothing like my husband who has raised him since day one and so much like his mother it's scary-and she's spent half his life living on the other side of the country.
