When we were at the psych. she said some things that really have me stressing-psychosis,psychotic episode,anti-psychotic drugs to name a few. She asked him why he was hitting people at school and he told her that the voices in his head tell him to do bad things. He has said this a couple of other times also. Attachment disorder, schizophrenia, these are all very discouraging things to hear. However she said it could be years before we can get a true diagnoses. For now she says we need to get his ADHD under control and get him on something to help with the extreme hyperactivity. While I agree that this is necessary I am very concerned about the other things she mentioned and don't know how I can just wait years to get an answer.

That would terrify me also. Does he say he actually hears someone else tell him to do things? That may make a difference between whether he is hearing himself thinking or having an "episode" of some kind. At his age, it may be hard for him to express what is actually going on accurately. Hang in there. No matter what, we are here with and for you!

Did she say WHY it could take years to get a diagnosis? Is it something that changes with maturity? I would be scared to pieces too! But at least shes aware of whats going on & will be working with him. She will help him over time it seems. My heart goes out to you & your sweet son & I will be praying that he gets all the help he needs! I think its a BIG plus that you are getting him started getting help at a young age. Maybe getting the ADHD under control will help some too.

She said that the reason is that many psychiatric illnesses have the same symptoms and we would most likely have to wait until he is older to see which way things go. I just called to schedule the EKG and they said they will not do it without a DX. I read them what the psych. wrote on the script and she told me they wont accept that-there has to be a DX. The cardio. office is going to call the psych. CG-he says he hears a voice that tells him to do these things but doesn't know who it is. He has also said a "bad germ" crawled into his brain and tells him to hit people.

I think that you should take a step back and start from the ground up here. Everyone your are dealing with is making this so garbled for you.
I would call your local children's hospital and schedule an appt with a neuro-psychologist for a comprehensive evaluation that includes educational testing. Pay out of pocket and just get it done. The report will be worth it's weight in gold. Get the report before you request the school to evaluate so they don't qualify your son under emotionally disturbed. And they will try if you don't do this in the right order--they tried this stunt with me.
Save the message left by the social worker.
Call your local CHADD chapter and ask for the name of an education advocate. You won't find this info in the phone book. You will find it through CHADD or on the internet if you are adept at searches. If you want to PM your city to me, I will see if I can find anyone in your area on the internet. Hunting down an advocate and then getting an initial appt could take weeks. I think it took me 6 weeks.
Reconsider your psychologist. She's saying some pretty funky things IMHO. I've had "professionals" say things like personality disassociation disorder regarding my son, and non-verbal learning disability regarding my daughter. It was all cr*p. It's called over-pathologizing. Apply your own logic to the situation; look the stuff up on the internet. I think you need to have your son evaluated by a really good well-educated neuro-psychologist and don't mention any of this psycho-babble (I just love that term) to the neuro-psyche. Let him/her test and provide you with an objective assessment.
Stop interacting with the school verbally -- do everything by FAX or by email. In the end the only thing that matters is the paper trail.
You need to figure out the insurance game, and that means getting on the phone with them. Tell them what you want, and ask them EXACTLY what it is they need for authorization. Get the name of the person who gives you the info. Calling back the same person and writing down what they said, the date they said it, etc worked the best for me. I even say things like "So if I call you back tomorrow at 10 AM, Cindy, the system will show that you have authorized this?" AKA, let them know that they are not off the hook when the phone call ends.

I like Notellin's advice. I think she is right on. I can't believe they won't do an ekg without a diagnosis. Its a diagnostic tool for pete's sake.

I just wanted to add that the guidance counselour called yesterday and said they are going to set up a meeting for June when they know who his 1st grade teacher will be so she can be there. I told her that I was still very concerned about the fact that Sean still did not recognize letters and numbers, can't write them etc.. She said that although he is certainly in the bottom half of his class he is still "teetering" on the edge of the point where they think intervention by the CST is necessary. I don't understand how bad off a child must be before it becomes a problem.
