The two-day forum, organised in connection with the opening celebrations of the new premises of the Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs in West Bay area, concluded yesterday. “Inclusion is necessary to prepare students to deal with individual differences, how they are different from others, and how others are different from them,” explained Dr Samar Mukallid, a faculty member of American University of Beirut’s Department of Education. Inclusive education means that all students in a school, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses in any area, become part of the school community. Sharing her personal perspectives on the topic, Dr Mukallid, who is one of the pioneers in her field in Lebanon, said that inclusion results in successful learning when dealing with students with mild disabilities.
