I got a letter today from the school containing Chase's 504 plan that the elementary had sent on to the middle school. On it were the accommodations that I had in place for his 5th grade year, but at the bottom were 2 new ones: Chase will be given fewer problems for homework, if needed. and Chase will be given time with the guidance counselor for help with organizational skills, if needed. These were highlighted, and a note was at the bottom, stating: "Jon and Anne, I added these two after reading the letter from your pediatrician detailing Chase's ADHD. I hope they are ok, and just let me know if there are any others that you need added." signed by the principal.
I am happy that he took this initiative, it seems like he is quite willing to go that extra mile to help Chase. I am going to ask for preferential seating (next to quiet hardworking students), syllabus' emailed to me so I know what is being assigned, email communication by Friday if an assignment is not turned in on time that week, and copies of notes needed for study when applicable.
Anyone have any other things that may be helpful?

Hi Puzzled,
Wow it really sounds like the 504 plan you have has covered everything. I'm so glad you were able to get that for Chase. It has been wonderful for Becca. She also gets the seating in the front of the class and can get extra time if she needs it for tests or class work. The teachers will also que her in if she is not keeping up with the class or gets distracted. Another good idea from one of the teachers was to partner her with someone that she is comfortable with in class that can help her stay on the same page as the rest of the class. The partner doesn't even have to know about the 504. I also keep in close contact by phone, email and meetings with her teachers. If there is anything else I can think of I will surely let you know. I'm so glad things are going well for you and look forward to hearing how the school year goes for Chase.

Puzzled, I don't have any suggestions but I just wanted to say I'm so happy to hear of someone who isn't fighting tooth and nail for every accomidation. Wonderful!

I am thrilled for you. Its encouraging to know there are school systems which care about the individual child.
