Ds went from 18mg of concerta to 27mgs now he is not sleeping or eating durring the day and looking thiner and thiner.
He is also on 1/2 mg Tenex 8 am and 1:00pm. Everytime we try to incresse the Tenex we go through a sleep walking period. Then bring it back to this dosage again.
The concerta seems to be going ok unless he is frustrated by something like a game or toy not doing what he wants it to do. Or his siblings irritating him he gets angry very easy. Not sure if the meds are making him more aggressive or not. He was some what like that before the meds. It just seems to come quicker these days! So the bennifits I seem to see are more calm and not climbing all the time! Not even sure if this would be enough for school! He get frustrated with nath when he dose not under stand it right away. I can see this being a problem again!
Thinking about doing the melatonin for sleep at night and ging off the tenex to see if things gett better. Rather try things now before school starts.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I'm so sorry, I am no help with your questions but I just wanted to say hi since you and I are the only ones online right now. I'm glad to see you again even though under some troubling circumstances. I hope someone, by tomorrow, has some helpful suggestions.

My daughter isn't on meds, but we do use the melatonin. I like it because it really works for her, its non-addictive, & can be used as needed. Getting a full night's rest eased her ADD symptoms a little too, is my belief!

meli, the anger and agression getting worse are things that I noticed when chase was on the concerta as well. He is a bit that way unmedicated, but on the concerta it did get gradually and markedly worse. But, with chase, the addition of the tenex was what did the trick..he was much better. Soon after the addition of the tenex, though, we switched to ritalin LA, which is just another long acting form of ritalin (like concerta). It does not last as long as the concerta, and I don't have to worry about the hyperactivity part...but Chase claims that the ritalin LA is "much better" for his focus than the concerta, and I know that it is much better for his appetite.
If the melatonin works for his sleep issues and the appetite is the only problem, you may want to look into the periactin. It helped chase's appetite a lot, and is over the counter in Canada...just an antihistamine like claritin or zyrtec.
But your son seems much more sensitive to meds than Chase...he had no side effects from the periactin, and the only side effect from the tenex for chase has been he is sleepier if not kept busy.

Getting a full night's rest eased her ADD symptoms a little too, is my belief! sleep is EXTREMELY important with people with ADHD and especially if on meds. i use melatonin when i start work at 3am and i have to be up at 1am. in that situation, i use 10mg instead of 20mgs of adderall for my final dose at 2pm. and i take 3mgs of melatonin at 5:30 and i sleep like a baby from 6pm to 1am. i find that i only have to take it on monday and i stay in that sleep cycle the entire week. if i dont get proper sleep, its like the meds are useless! i hope this helps somebody!

Things dont seem to be gaetting any better. He had a melt down at dinner about his hot dog bun and tried to lift and tip the kitchen table over and then went into crying hystarics! He dose not normally act like this! Even without meds! The Drs apt is tomarrow I have no gas or the $ for the copay! So Iam going to have to reshedual it! We will have $ on wednesday but that don't help for tomarrow!
I want to pick up some melatonin what varieties are there out on the market? Any ideas? Where do you guys get yours? What do you pay?

Meli...I feel for you and completely understand. My Josh is very sensitive to meds. The first two years he was dx with adhd, they worked great, at very low levels. Then we hit a wall when he was nine. He can't take any stims now because they make him very aggressive and emotional. Conterta worked great for awhile, but the rebound time around dinner, was a nightmare. We've tried them all, Adderall, Ritilin LA, Concerta, and Straterra. I have to say that the Strattera worked best for the aggressive/moody crap the stims would bring.
Now, as for the Tenex...We just started this two weeks ago today. I'm finding that when this is leaving his system it is EXACTLY like the rebound that he used to get from the stims. So, I'm wondering if the Concerta and Tenex together is causing this behavior. If the Concerta is coming out of his system at dinner, and the Tenex is given at 1:00pm, he could be experiencing them both leaving his system at the same time, which would be rough. I know they say that the Tenex is suppose to last 6 to 8 hours, but I have been watching Josh very closely, and I'm finding that 1/2 mg is lasting him about 4 1/2 to 5 hours best. As for the sleeping, I have NEVER had a problem with Josh sleeping. Even when he was on stims, he was in bed at 8:30pm and asleep mintues later. For the last two weeks since he started the Tenex he NOT sleeping well, he's up 2 to 3 times a night! I give him 1/2 mg at about 7:30pm. I'm at a loss about the sleep, I'm just not used to him not sleeping. Everyone says the Tenex should make him tired, but I haven't seen it yet. Josh is SUPER Hyper...can't make him stop all day.
So, I don't know. This has been our experience...I hope it helps in some way. Good Luck...I know how hard it is.

I buy Natrol brand melatonin at Rite Aid drug store, but I've used other brands from Walmart & the grocery store as well & never saw a difference in their effectiveness. I use 3 mg. I've heard of people who's kids needed eventually to go higher up to 5 or 6 MG but Shannon has never needed more than 3 Mg. Its not expensive. A bottle of 60 tablets is only around 5 - 6.00.

You can also get it at Dollar General. The 3mg tablets cost about $2.50 for 75 pills. I use it when I can't sleep, Jake and Chelsea have both used it and Chase uses it about 3 times a week.
I am so sorry that your sons are having such issues with the tenex! It just shows again that every one is so different in the way that they react to the meds....I have never seen rebound symptoms in Chase on concerta, nor on the ritalin LA and tenex. I never know when the med leaves his system, unless he tells me...but he is primarily ADHD inattentive, so that may be why.

Stimulants can cause serious meltdowns when the child is coming down from them. My son's old psychiatrist recommended fish oil given at dinner, when Ritalin LA was causing my son to become sensitive in the late afternoon, BUT my son never did very well on stims, anyway. We just give him Tenex at night before bed, and it works wonders, kind of like a mild tranquilizer.
