Day one was HORIBBLE, the school called me by 9:30 am and basically said we cant do anything with him he is extremely disruptive and hyper, can you come and get him and keep him home until we come back to school next Tuesday and get this fixed for him. So the 15 mg patch is like no meds at all!! He had to miss 2 days of school, they are off on Monday thank goodness. Well I called the dr's office this morning and told them and the main psych said I can put 2 of the 15 mg patches on him equal to a 30 mg patch and call them on Monday and let them know how this goes. My poor son so far hates the patch and wants his pills back because he feels so out of control and couldn'g even go to school!! I hope this gets better for him, I feel like maybe I made the wrong choice but we just wanted to help him by trying something he wont hopefully metabolize so quickly. I just hope the 30 is enough because he is maxed out on everything else. BTW no itching or anything so far, just the red spot but it was gone by this morning.

I'm sorry it didn't work for him. I hope they find something soon that helps. I wasn't aware that a school could call you and tell you to come pick up your kid and keep them home. That sounds strange to me.

Thanks katiekat. We are trying 2 patches today and so far 2.5 hours after application I am not noticing any differences. The school is a small town K-12 with about 30-50 kids in each grade level. So they have no idea how to help my child or handle him when the meds are switching or not working. Their answer is for mom to come and get him. The teacher says he was too disruptive for the other student and she didnt want him being made fun of. The principal took him to her office and he was still out of control. Their only other answer would be the special ed room or in school suspension for behavior, but I would rather pick him up than have him punished for something he cant control. I hope these start working, but if not we will go back to Focalin, it works great just doesnt last, only like 2.5 hours for him and the Focalin XR only lasts 4-5 hours and if we give it in the afternoon it caused sleep issues.

Ok, day 5 with the patch. The 2 15mg patches are working much better. My son says it feels like his pills to him. I have put in a call to his dr though because it is still taking like 3-4 hours to kick in, so I would like to give him 10 mg Focalin in the morning when I put the patch on so he can be ready for school, then when that wears off, the patch should be kicking in. I am noticing he is more calm in the morning than normal, but even when the patch should be kicking in he is a little silly. I mean is it perfectly fine for home, but I dont know how it will be when he goes back to school tomorrow. I really hope this works. It seems to be lasting 2-3 hours after removal too. But it seems most things work for him and then 3 months down the road........ poof it's not working anymore. I guess I need to be more optimistic. I have read also that 4-5 weeks after starting the patch it can start working faster and releasing more medicine for some reason!!! I hope this is true. I will let you know how school goes!!

I have heard of other parents who have given a pill to pick up the slack till the patch kicks in.
Good luck! I hope that this is the thing that works for the long haul!

Well, no good luck here, at least for now anyway. The psych's office called and said the dr said no to the pill when applying the patch. They made an appt for us today to check in. My son sees the phys asst there and he said we are maxed out on all of the different meds and the patch doesnt seem to be strong enough for school at 30 mg so he wants us to see the actual psychiatrist. Thanks for the wasted copay and visit!! We have an appt with the psych on next Wed. We are going to continue with the patch until then and see what happens. Things are great at home, but at school, even though I put it on at 6 am he still was talking inappropriately until 10 am and then was not able to focus to complete schoolwork like he has been on the Focalin. Hopefully, the psych will either up the dose on the patch, give a pill with the patch, or up his dosage of pills. My son did very well on Concerta until it quit working on 54 mg and they did not want to up the dose. But now that we have maxed out every type of drug and it's still not enough, they are going to have to do something. Thanks for all of your thoughts and listening to me carry on. Sometimes my friends and family dont understand what we go through!!

I know this doesn't sound like much fun but is there any way you can set your alarm and put the patch on him at 4 or 5 am so its kicking in closer to when you need it?

Charliegirl, thanks for the idea. I did just that this morning. I got up at 5 put on he patches, and he then slept until 7:30. Everything is fine at home, but once I drop him off at school the whole thing goes up in smoke. He was wild in the gym, and then when they went to their class, he walks in and starts shouting silly things and disrupting the class. The school called me by 10:30 this morning and said he was in the office working, and working quietly. The 30 mg patch is just not enough plain and simple. I regret that I am going to put him back on his Focalin tomorrow. It works wonderful just lapses because it wears off so quickly. I will then see if the main psych will give more patch or what? I was wondering do you or anyone else have any experience with kids who max out every type of med there is? I mean he metabolizes so quikcly we always max out and it's still not enough for school. I am scared to go over what the FDA recommends, but I guess as long as his heart is healthy and it helps him to function I will do what the dr thinks best.

We did the patch. It was ok at first. But then always peeled off and got stuck on clothing and came off. Or it itched her so bad, like Tiff never got used to it. So after 4 months I took her off it it. It was good in theory but not in reality for us.
