There's a fairly new show on called Super Nanny and it happens to be on right now 9:00pm Philadelphia time on Channel 6 if anyone is interested in checking it out. Tonight's episode is about a little boy with ADHD. He's so cute, but a handful for his parents. I'm going to see what solutions this Nanny comes up with to help. Just thought I mention it if anyone is interested.

Aww....I missed it! I read the little preview thing in TV guide. It said the father acted like another child...I bet he's ADHD too. Losty, will you let us know what the nanny told the family?

I did not get much info. from the nanny. She did tell the mom to be more positive when she helped the boy do homework which seemed to work. The dad spent all his time hiding upstairs from the kids and didnt help the mom at all. I didnt really relate the little boys behavior to ADHD or anything I've gone through because all he did was hit, punch, kick, bite and scream at his mom. The mom appeared to be scared of him(he was 6) and let him get away with murder.

I didn't get to see the whole thing but as soon as I read Losty's post I ran downstairs to watch.
Honestly, I don't think they showed the little guy with ADHD enough to really get an idea what an ADHD child is like, however, I did like that the Nanny showed the Mom what it is like to be her son by having her try to read an article with the kids all screaming, jumping, pulling on her....distracting her like her son gets distracted (sort of). I thought that was cool but I guess what I liked most is they are validating there IS SUCH a thing as ADHD.
And then I watched Oprah after that and cried my eyes out. That was a very touching show.

I didn't see the Oprah show but did see the Nanny show and Katie I think you are right about there being more then ADHD there. One major point I got from the show is how important a parent's' behavior is and that sometimes a parent's behavior needs to change in order to really help the child. I have experienced that myself. I find that the less I am in control, the worse the situation gets. The little guy that was on the show is so cute. I sure hope the parents get continued help and can eventually provide a happy and healthy life for him.

CG, I'll tell you about Oprah in the chat board.
The only thing the Nanny said was how important it was that you let your ADHD child have a VERY QUIET place to do their homework - away from all distractions and that you have to keep positive with the child and keep him/her on task with encouraging words and praise. The example was that the Mom immediately said, "I know this looks like a lot of homework" which is a negative thing to say. According to the show, homework was a 2 hour ordeal and when the Mom did what the Nanny suggested it ended up being only 20 minutes on homework. (Correct me if I'm wrong because I myself was a little distracted, LOL)
Even though the show is obviously edited big time, I think- in my opinion, the opposition the little guy was showing was a direct result of the Mom screaming at him.
