Yes, my daughters school is much smaller & all the kids go out every day, even when its cold! Today at the school I'm in, the 6th grade was forced to have a silent lunch. NO ONE was allowed to talk, whisper, laugh, etc for the full lunch period. All because yesterday they weren't quiet during their silent minutes. Isn't that what they do in prisons to keep the inmates under control?

Who makes up these rules? Is there a head monitor or something? Maybe someone should just let slip to the PTA about this sort of thing. I can imgine what a group of parents, visiting the board to complain about it, could do about it.
I totally agree that they can't be yelling and running around but not being allowed to talk at all is just plain mean.

There are several teachers at each lunch period. The principal herself makes the rules and she was in there today helping enforce it!

Who do you know in the PTA? Were the teachers talking to each other? I bet they were. 1. no one 2. No, not really, only to ask for a pen or something if they had to write someone up. Actually the teachers were walking around & talking to this student or that & one teacher was sitting with a group of students & helping them with some work they were doing.

misty do you know any pf the just every day parents of the children that attend there? Maybe just a well placed word or two....are parents allowed to come and eat lunch with their children when they want to? We can, if we want to. If so, just tell them to come and visit...then they will see for themselves. Or if you look around the building, you are bound to find some notice of some PTA function that will have a phone number or name of someone to contact for info on the PTA....

Ok...I bet I can find a PTA #. I will look on Tuesday.
Several parents HAVE been in eating with their kids & as far as I can tell, they don't mind the rules at all. Many of the kids in that part of the district come from homes where the parents don't much care what the kids are doing, so long as they aren't bothering THEM. Its sad but unfortunately true. Our school district is HUGE. A few years back 6 districts merged to form my district. The school Shannon attends encompasses the part of the district that are mostly middle class families. The school I'm in is mostly lower class...gangs, fights, kids attacking each other & running loose with no supervision is the norm in the areas these kids come from. I think the principal is setting strict guidelines to try to teach the kids that life has rules. I like the principal...she has a lot of great programs in place for the kids. When they behave there are some awesome benefits. The teachers really do seem to care. Like I said, they walk around & converse with the kids, they sit & talk to them, help them with problems, etc. Yes, it stinks that they have to be absolutely silent & it REALLY stinks that they can't have recess, but maybe theres more than I know yet to these rules. I've only been there a month & a half.....I'm still learning about things. I don't know that I want to rock the boat much at this point. From what I've observed the parents aren't complaining & they know this rule exists. I will keep my eyes open & keep doing what I'm doing (which is giving multiple warnings instead of writing them up for every whisper...I just can't be that mean) and we will see what happens.

OK Chase said that his ISS was fine today, and Seth was there. He got 2 recesses, but the second one was inside due to rain. He said that one of the 1st graders was way out of hand and had to be taken out of the room and down to the office. He told me the name, and I had this boy in preschool (this town is so small..you pretty much know everybody). He was a spoiled little meanie then and apparently he hasn't improved. But how could he? His mom and gramma told us at our initial home visit that whatever he wanted, they gave him, and pretty much let us know that no matter what anyone else thought, they were not going to stop doing that! Chase said that he whined so much, couldn't speak unless it was in a whiny tone. Then when that didn't work, he threw a fit and had to be removed to the office...
The principal called me and said that the teachers all said that Chase is fine except for the fact that he sometimes does not turn in work....which I knew, and it is only occasional and his grades are all high, so I am not going to lose too much sleep over it.

I think that is wise misty...you don't want to risk your job, or being made to feel uncomfortable or like a squealer. At least you have the leeway to give the warnings, and if the student body is really as unsupervised as you say by parents, maybe strict rules are what they need.
Our rule was not a rule per say, it seemed to be the lunchroom aides just wanting silence, there were no announcements going on or anything important, they just kept having quiet contests. And this was to determine who got to go out to recess first, not to take recess away...our kids go out every day too, unless it is raining or extremely wet.
